GeoFORCE Learning Community

The GeoFORCE Learning Community (GeoLC) is designed to enhance the  participation and academic success of geoscience students from underrepresented groups when they attend college at UAF. Our goal is to engage student from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the geosciences including, but not limited to students who; are from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds (Hispanic, Latino African-American, Alaska Native, Native American, Pacific Islander), are first generation college students, graduated from rural or inner-city high schools, identify at LGBTQ+, identify as female.

Geoscience majors are invited to apply for financial and academic support available to members of the GeoLC. To be eligible for the Fall 2023 semester students must:

  1. Be enrolled in GEOS F101 or GEOS F213 during the Fall 2023 semester
  2. Be a graduate of GeoFORCE Alaska or be a Geoscience major/prospective major
  3. Attend the weekly GeoLC Study Hall Thursdays from 1:15pm to 2:15pm during Spring 2024 
  4. Attend weekly supplementary instruction meetings on Mondays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm during Spring 2024, if enrolled in GEOS F1112

Students who are accepted into the Learning Community, attend weekly meetings, and maintain a 2.5 GPA average, will receive a $1,000 scholarship per semester. Students will also receive supplementary geoscience instruction, homework help, tutoring, and community building during weekly study halls.

Applications will be reviewed by staff of the GeoFORCE Alaska Program. Students will be selected on the basis of academic interests, motivation, and programmatic fit. GeoLC activities will take place weekly throughout the academic year.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  1. Be a graduate of GeoFORCE Alaska or be a Geoscience major/prospective major
  2. Be enrolled in or have completed GEOS 101 and GEOS 112
  3. Attend the weekly GeoLC Study Hall 
  4. Attend weekly supplementary instruction meetings 
  5. Maintain a 2.5 GPA average for the semester.
