GeoFORCE Learning Community
The GeoFORCE Learning Community (GeoLC) is designed to enhance the participation and academic success of geoscience students from underrepresented groups when they attend college at UAF. Our goal is to engage student form racial and ethnic groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the geosciences (Black or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Alaska Natives, American Indians, Native Hawaiians, or Pacific Islanders), graduates of rural high schools, and first-generation college students.
Freshman Geoscience majors are invited to apply for financial and academic support available to members of the GeoLC. Students who are accepted into the Learning Community will receive a $1,000 scholarship per semester for the next three years of their academic studies ($6,000 total between 2020 and 2023). Students will also receive supplementary geoscience instruction, homework help, and tutoring during weekly study halls.
Apply
The next round of applications will be accepted in August for the Fall 2021 semester.
Applications will be reviewed by staff of the GeoFORCE Alaska Program. Students will be selected on the basis of academic interests, motivation, and programmatic fit. GeoLC activities will take place weekly throughout the academic year.
Eligibility
Current and prospective Geoscience majors from all racial, ethnic, academic, and socioeconomic backgrounds are welcome to apply. To be eligible to join the GeoLC, students must:
- Be enrolled in Geos 101 during the fall 2020 semester
- Declare or plan to declare a major in Geoscience
- Maintain a GPA of 2.5 once enrolled in GeoLC
